Caged Birds Sing
Caged Birds Sing
"In ‘Caged Birds Sing,' I explore the interplay between freedom and captivity, the balance between autonomy and constraint. The suggestion that even in captivity, the spirit finds a way to sing. The ceramic head symbolizes the human psyche, housing both the conscious and subconscious realms. Yet, atop it rests a birdcage, representing societal constructs and expectations that confine and restrict individual expression.
Within the cage perches a bird, traditionally a symbol of freedom. However, this bird is pierced by nails, representing the pressures and burdens imposed by society. Its plight reflects the struggle of the individual to break free from the constraints of convention and expectation, to reclaim autonomy despite the pervasive influence of external forces.
The head resting upon a bed of nails serves as a stark reminder of the discomfort and pain inherent in the pursuit of self-liberation. It symbolizes the sacrifices and challenges faced in the journey towards authenticity and self-realization.
Through ‘Caged Birds Sing,' I invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of the human condition, the tensions between conformity and individuality, and the enduring quest for liberation amidst the constraints of society.”
